10 Rules For Cancer Prevention

This month, people are coming together to raise awareness and increase the prevention, treatment and research funding for cancer worldwide. In honor of World Cancer Day and International Childhood Cancer Day, we break down some healthy tips for cancer prevention.

Avoid tobacco in all forms: We all know how tobacco leads to severe lung disease, such as lung cancer. Try to avoid second-hand smoke as much as possible too.

Stay lean: Obesity increases the risk of many forms of cancer.

Prioritize sleep: Insufficient sleep is associated with weight gain, which is a cancer risk factor.

Limit alcohol intake: If you drink, try not to have more than one drink a day. Excess alcohol increases the risk of cancers of the mouth, larynx (voice box), esophagus (food pipe), liver and colon; it also increases a woman’s risk of breast cancer.

Increase Vitamin D intake: Evidence suggests that vitamin D may help reduce the risk of prostate cancer, colon cancer, and other malignancies.

Eat properly: Eating less red meat and saturated fats lowers your risks of developing colon cancer and a more aggressive form of prostate cancer in men.

Always remember, trust your gut and when in doubt, ask a doctor.
