Breast Cancer Awareness: Reducing Your Risk

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, an annual campaign designed to educate and increase awareness of this disease. Breast cancer is one of the leading causes of death among women worldwide, affecting millions every year. Although there’s no sure way to prevent breast cancer, there are certain factors that could lower your risk.

Staying physically active

Maintaining a healthy weight, along with a balanced diet and physical activity is linked with lower breast cancer risk. Exercising at least 30 minutes a day, for at least four to five days a week, can boost your immune system, regulate a healthy weight and improve bone mass – all which lower the risk of breast cancer.

Limit or avoid alcohol

According to the American Cancer Society, alcohol has been linked to a greater risk of breast cancer. You can reduce your risk by avoiding it altogether or limiting your intake to one drink per day.

Learn about the risks of hormone replacement therapies

Combination hormone therapy for more than three to five years increases the risk of breast cancer. If you’re taking hormone therapy, consult with your doctor about the risks and other available options.
