The Three Pillars of Breast Cancer Awareness

Every October we promote increased awareness around Breast Cancer. This past year Breast Cancer has overtaken lung cancer as the world’s most diagnosed cancer, creating an increased sense of urgency in 2021. Investors Trust is proud to promote this cause and share the Three Pillars of Breast Cancer Awareness as written by the World Health Organization.

Three Pillars of Breast Cancer Awareness:

  • Health promotion – This includes public education about the signs and symptoms of breast cancer and risk reduction strategies. Furthermore, reducing the stigma associated with breast health that exists in some parts of the world is very important for educating and awareness.
  • Timely diagnosis – The goal is to reduce delays between the time a patient first pursues visiting a doctor, and the initiation of breast cancer treatment. Breast tumors do not change in rapidly over days or weeks, but cancer survival rates begin to rise the sooner a diagnosis is made.
  • Comprehensive treatment and supportive care – Encompassingincreased access to surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy and rehabilitation support following treatment.

Death rates have been decreasing with increased awareness efforts, and an overall better understanding of effect treatments around the world. It’s important to promote this globally because breast cancer is better treated when diagnosed early. Out of all cases last year, 64% of cases were diagnosed at a localized stage, meaning there is no sign that the cancer has spread outside of the breast, and yielded a 5-year survival rate of 99%. Since 1990 survival rates have been increasing. Screening for early detection is key. Women, and men of all ages are at risk.
